Description:
The Design Engineer will collaborate with other staff on product design, research and development, marketing, and manufacturing teams to create highly functional products or services that are profitable and meet our customers’ needs. Familiar with working in a fast paced and customer driven engineering team, you will take ownership of all design related aspects of the New Product Introduction and Engineering Change Management to deliver our projects on time and within budget. Reporting directly to the head of department and liaising with our product experts.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conducting and/or using research on user experience and needs, current market trends and general functionality of optical products.
Developing solutions that solve customer pain points.
Determining whether a design solution is craft-friendly, cost-effective, and environmentally sound.
Design 3D models of product concepts from technical descriptions and sketches.
Creating multiple iterations of design prototypes using computer-aided design tools.
Conducting rigorous usability tests and modifying the product based on the test results.
Evaluating design solutions against industry standards and regulations.
Specifying materials & processes for product creation.
Translating 3D models into manufacturing drawings to enable production.
Effecting design revisions and updates as required by our ECM system.
Creation & maintenance of ‘Bill of Materials’ for finished products.
Engagement with materials suppliers, partners, internal customers & external customers to support the project life cycle.
Documenting the design process and presenting progress reports to all relevant stakeholders.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements and Qualifications:
Ability to travel domestically up to 10% of the year
Experience working in a technical fast paced company
Ability to analyze and synthesize complex content.
Strong technical aptitude – ability to quickly learn new concepts and tools
Track record of effective collaboration
Maintain professional business relationships within target accounts
Four years SolidWorks 3D, CREO or similar design software
Four years project planning/implementation
Four years fabrication/manufacturing techniques (injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, component assembly, cellular manufacturing etc.)
education and experience:
Degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience
In-depth knowledge of SolidWorks 3D, CREO or similar design software
Previous experience in working with supply chain partners.
Conversant with project planning & management techniques
Working knowledge of fabrication and/or manufacturing processes
Able to communicate effectively at all levels of a business
Skills Desired:
Microsoft proficiency (Outlook, Excel, Word)
Excellent writing and proofreading skills
Ability to write clearly and succinctly for multiple audiences using formal and casual tones
Ability to work quickly, efficiently, and multi-task.
Excellent work ethic and strong intellectual curiosity
